Hydrostatic Testing of Cylinders  Hydrostatic testing verifies that the cylinder can safely hold its rated pressure. Hydrotesting is required by the Department of Transportation (DOT) at the following intervals:
- Steel cylinders—every 5 years (indefinite life until it fails a hydro test)
- All aluminum (not including hoop wrapped)—every 5 years (indefinite life until it fails a hydro test)
- Hoop-wrapped—every 3 years (15 year life)
- Fully wrapped fiberglass—every 3 years (15 year life)
- Fully wrapped Kevlar—every 3 years (15 year life)
- Fully wrapped carbon fiber—every 5 years (15 year life)
Maintenance/Overhaul Schedule The following are Survivair's requirements for flow testing and overhauls:
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
- Panther®, Cougar™, Puma®, Commando™, and Mark 3™ SCBA manufactured after April 1998: No mandatory overhauls are required for these SCBA models including those configured with the Mark 2™ first stage regulator.* The exception is early Panthers (those manufactured prior to the introduction of redundant alarms) which incorporate the 961040/961060 gauge/alarm assembly. Only the gauge/alarm assemblies must be overhauled every six years.
- Sigma™, Omega, SECOBA, and LO-PRO™ SCBA manufactured prior to April 1998: No mandatory overhauls are required for the 961193 (4500 psig) and 961181 (2216 psig) forged body, first stage regulators. The second stage regulator and gauge/alarm assembly must be overhauled every 6 years.
- Mark 2 SCBA* manufactured after January 1992: No mandatory overhaul is required for this SCBA model. Mark 2 SCBA manufactured prior to January 1992 must be overhauled every 3 years and the first stage piston must be replaced every 6 years.
- XL-style SCBA: No change in the overhaul policy; this SCBA must be overhauled every three years.
Hip-Pacs
- All Survivair Hip-Pacs configured with the 975200 pressure reducer: No mandatory overhaul is required for this specific component manufactured after January 1993.
- Panther Hip-Pacs manufactured after April 1998: No mandatory overhaul is required for this Hip-Pac model.
- Sigma Hip-Pacs: No change in the overhaul policy; this Hip-Pac must be overhauled every six years except for the 975200 pressure reducer as noted above.
- Mark 2 Hip-Pacs manufactured after January 1994: No mandatory overhaul is required for this Hip-Pac model.
- XL-style Hip-Pacs: No change in the overhaul policy; this Hip-Pac must be overhauled every three years except for the 975200 pressure reducer as noted above.
Supplied Air Respirators (SAR)
- Panther Pressure Demand SARs manufactured after April 1998: No mandatory overhaul is required for this SAR model.
- Sigma Pressure Demand SARs: No change in the overhaul policy; this SAR must be overhauled every six years.
- Mark 2 Pressure Demand SARs manufactured after January 1994: No mandatory overhaul is required for this SAR model.
- XL-style Pressure Demand SARs: No change in the overhaul policy; this SAR must be overhauled every three years.
Please Note:
Annual flow testing is still required by Survivair and by NFPA 1852. Should a pneumatic problem be discovered during the annual flow test, the appropriate component adjustment, repair, or replacement must be done at that time.
Miscellaneous
- Cylinder valves on steel, aluminum, or fully wrapped carbon fiber cylinders must be overhauled every 5 years or at each hydrostatic test.
- Cylinder valves on composite cylinders: hoop wrapped, full wrapped, fiberglass, or Kevlar must be overhauled every 6 years or at every other hydrostatic test.
- Portable Test Consoles must be recalibrated once yearly at the Survivair factory.
- Posicheck computerized SCBA Performance Testers must be recalibrated once yearly at the Biosystems factory.
Modification of Survivair Products Contact Survivair for information on modifications, upgrades and optional equipment available for your Survivair products. Only NIOSH approved kits and modifications may be made to Survivair products. Unauthorized modifications will result in loss of NIOSH approval.

Repair of Survivair Products Only Survivair-certified technicians may overhaul or make major repairs to Survivair products. Limited repairs and maintenance may be made by non-technicians as outlined in our current operation manuals.
Technical Certification Classes At Survivair, our strong commitment to product training and comprehensive product knowledge provides the foundation for our customer-first service philosophy.
Our training facility, located in the Survivair corporate offices, is equipped with modern audio-visual equipment. Our education team provides hands-on instruction at the factory or in the field in the overhaul and repair of Survivair products. Graduates of our technical training courses earn diplomas as Survivair-certified repair technicians.
To make sure our respirators are worn correctly and fit workers properly, Survivair offers accessories such as probed facepieces and fit test adapters. These enable Survivair customers to accurately perform qualitative and quantitative respirator fit tests.
Plus, Survivair offers a variety of support materials for respirator training and fit testing programs. These include APR and SCBA donning, use, and maintenance videos; fit test videos; work-site respirator donning posters; and Survivair product literature. These items provide additional helpful on-the-job information to Survivair customers.
